The program for this project required the razing of the breezeway and one car garage of an existing ranch house on a quiet street in southern Maine. The client requested a new, larger multi-car garage to accommodate two automobiles and a new boat, motor and trailer. The addition also would incorporate a new dining area off the existing kitchen, a new family room-den with a new adjacent deck overlooking a very picturesque rear yard.
The challenge, which was successfully met, was to design the new addition, which was over twice the size of the remaining house, such that it did not over power the original house. This enabled the owner to store three large vehicles (two cars and a large boat) as well as to allow for garden equipment and a small work area.
